Upon beginning my position as Social Media and Marketing Coordinator of the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program, I was immediately motivated by the powerful presence of passion and positivity that illuminated the halls of the SCYAP office in Columbia which houses the Midlands Region, Community-Based Services, and State Office. The infectious energy of the office was validated through some truly inspiring and insightful meetings I was able to arrange with employees in the Midlands Region for Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC).

The Kelly Krew

By Monica Kelly, Myrtle Beach Regional Director

A few years ago on my Facebook page, I started a saying to describe funny events that happened to us only because we are a large, adoptive family.  You might be a large, adoptive family if…. The other thing that I have done is name our family The Kelly Krew. The following blog entry is a glimpse into the life of The Kelly Krew:

A Silver Jubliee

By Melanie Taylor, Charleston Regional Director

July 30th was another day in the service of youth and families across this state for SCYAP. It was a day without fanfare, but significant in that July 30th marked the 25th anniversary of my association with SCYAP. 25 years, a quarter century of SCYAP service, a silver anniversary, a cause for a silver jubilee...

One day this summer a youth from the Midlands Region went to work thinking it was just an ordinary day. This young lady had recently graduated from high school and made plans to attend Midlands Tech in the fall. During her summer employment doing sales, one of her clients happened to be the Vice President of SC State University in Orangeburg, SC.  The Vice President spoke with our youth about the university and saw a great deal of potential in this young lady.

It wasn’t long before this chance encounter resulted in a life-changing opportunity for this youth...

The month of May is a time to recognize the hard work and heart work of foster parents, child service professionals, volunteers, policymakers, and other members of the community who make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. During National Foster Care Month, we encourage all community members to participate in efforts to raise awareness about Therapeutic Foster Care and celebrate all those who serve these children throughout the year.

There are several ways to help raise awareness for National Foster Care Month and begin that first step of change in a child’s life. Use our free tools...

Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.

At SCYAP, we believe a home should be a safe and nurturing environment where each child can grow to his or her fullest potential. Unfortunately, however, many children in our state and nation have experienced or at risk of experiencing abuse and/or neglect. Latest figures from the South Carolina Department of Social Services show that in 2013 there were almost 30,000 reports of child abuse and/or neglect made. Even 1 report is 1 too many!

Join the 7.3 million people committed to...

In 1990 the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program, SCYAP, was created with a mission in mind. We wanted to provide safe homes and nurturing families to children that had been abused and neglected throughout our state. We knew that we could do it, but not without the help of the community and individuals willing to provide these homes.
